Guernsey’s first female Bailiff

Guernsey’s first female Bailiff

25 September 2026
Guernsey

On 25 September, Mrs. Jessica Rolland became the first female Bailiff of Guernsey since 1278. Jessica Rolland succeeds Sir Richard McMahon who has been in office since 2020. The Bailiff is appointed by the King for an unlimited duration. This position is a Norman legacy of the Duchy of Normandy which enforced Norman law on behalf of the Duke of Normandy. The Bailiff is now a civic representative who also has important responsibilities within the judicial system. The Bailiff also chairs the island’s Parliamentary Assembly, although he does not have the right to vote. Watch again this historic moment here.

BIAN congratulates Miss Jessica Rolland for making history!
